Pony's Pass Quarry

Pony's Pass Quarry is located on East Falkland, approximately five miles south-west of Stanley, and is accessed only by road linking Stanley to Mount PleasantAirport and the military garrison. The quarry has been operated by the Materials Section of the Public Works Department of the Falkland Islands Government for many years on an ad-hoc basis. Since 1982 Anglo-Argentine conflict the demand for construction aggregates increased steadily in line with the growth of the islands' infrastructure, and the Quarry now processes some 60,000-120,000 tonnes per annum of Quartzitic sandstone with 12 product sizes ranging from -5mm to Armourstone.

Quarry 013

Pony's pass is currently the only operational quarry on the Islands and therefore has to satisfy a market with a broad range of product requirements. Its largest single customer is the Falkland Islands Government construction partner, Morrison Falkland Ltd who account for 35% of sales/demand. Government departments account for a further 25% and the private sector including Ministry of Defence contractors account for 40%. In some years external projects have changed the split. For example runway re-surfacing project at Mount Pleasant (Project Shackleton) which consisted of circa 40,000 tonnes of crushed aggregates of various sizes and specifications to be delivered by a certain date in specification was completed on target.

The quarry is currently undergoing a replacement programme to improve both production and capacity and product quality to meet the islands' increasing demand for high-quality aggregates.

This is in the form of a new mobile jaw crusher (Metso LT120) to increase production of primary crusher run. It also acts as a standby for the static plant.

Also an AggreSand Washing Plant from Duo will be used to produce washed aggregates and also wash the by-product (scalpings) from the static plant so there is less waste material. A new drill rig (Sandvik DX800) was purchased in 2010 and commissioned in 2011. There is also a new shovel loader Volvo L250G on route to the Falklands along with a new 50 Tonne Volvo Excavator.

Asphalt Plant

The Materials section also has a Parker SRM60 Super Blackmobile coated stone plant located at Megabid at the eastern end of Stanley some 10 miles away.
