New Port for the Falkland Islands

 FIPASS

The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) is pleased to announce that work to design and build the New Port Facility commenced in August 2020. The vision is to replace the existing port with a new facility that will benefit key users in the fishing, tourism and shipping sectors, as well as many other parts of the economy. The new facility will support the national economy and enable ongoing future economic growth across many business sectors.

FIG has appointed BAM Nuttall Ltd. to design and build the Port. BAM Nuttall is a global contractor with extensive UK and international experience in maritime works, including most recently works to Rothera Wharf in Antarctica. The contract for the works was signed in April 2020 and a team of BAM Nuttall’s key personnel arrived in the Falkland Islands in August 2020.  From September until the end of 2020, activity will focus on the collection of information to allow the scope of the project to be developed.  There will be extensive stakeholder engagement and onshore and offshore ground investigations, as well as other surveys.  Feedback from these activities will inform a Demand Study, and the Concept Design for the new port in these early works will be completed in the first quarter of 2021, paving the way for the next decision gateway for Falkland Islands Government, to request progression to detailed design stage (Stage 1B).
