Upon completing his B.Sc. Biology at McGill University, Thomas spent several seasons as a fisheries observer in the Bering Sea working on trawl, pot and longline vessels. There, he acquired an interest for applying biological sciences to resource management and economic development.

He completed his Masters at California State University Long Beach studying habitat restoration and fish movement, then moved to Alaska for his Ph.D. in Fisheries at the University of Alaska Fairbanks where he conducted an interdisciplinary assessment of the skate fishery in the Gulf of Alaska. This work encompassed an investigation of the ecology, population dynamics, nutritional content and bioeconomics of skates and their fisheries, helping to improve the sustainability and profitability of these understudied species.

Thomas also spent a year as a Sea Grant Knauss Marine Policy fellow in Washington D.C., where he worked on marine policy issues ranging from ocean acidification to seafood sustainability for the United States Congress. He joined the Falkland Islands Fisheries Department in May of 2017 as a stock assessment scientist, focusing on Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) and Illex squid management.
